Bern School Museum
A Historical Learning Environment, a SchoolSchaulager and a Schoolhistory Research Workshop are the three pillars of the Bern School Museum. The museum, with two locations in Köniz near Bern, is dedicated to Swiss school history dating back to the 17th century. The collection comprises approximately 80’000 objects, which are preserved in the SchoolSchaulager and brought to life there. Through collection, research, presentation, and teaching, the School Museum promotes an understanding of schools as cultural heritage.
The newly created SchoolSchaulager serves as an open repository for objects spanning five centuries of school history. It is an ideal platform for exhibitions and participatory education, as well as a treasure trove for researchers.
The history of the Bern School Museum begins with teacher Kurt Hofer (1944–2017), who collected school-related items passionately and with a pioneering spirit throughout his life. Since 2007, the Bern School Museum has been organized as a foundation and has been housed in the Haberhuus at Köniz Castle since 2008. On the occasion of the collection’s move to the SchoolSchaulager at its new location on Sägestrasse in Köniz, the Foundation Board has conceptually and organizationally realigned the School Museum for 2026.
